Cissie had told Roy she would call him after she talked with her mother, but she waited a few hours to do it. She needed to compose herself so he wouldn't think she was upset when she called.

She laughed again. "What, over the chili? Not... a lot!"

"uh-huh." Roy said, "Hon, you were suffering. It was sad."

"Well, it was just my tastebuds being burned off my tongue. That's not a big deal, right?"

"It really is okay, I promise. No lasting damage!"

"Well, still." Roy said, "It was a bad prank to pull."

"I didn't know it was a prank!"

"....oops?" Roy said, sheepishly. "See, now, I'm out of practice, I used to prank all the time, but that was the first one in years and I just gave it away..." he sighed. "I have to go back and get more lessons from Gar."

She laughed. "And here I thought that you poisoned me by mistake."

"It wasn't poison." Roy muttered, "And I do, occasionally, make it that strong on purpose..."

"Because you have to, since you've burned off all your taste buds."

"Have not." Roy said pettishly.

"Ollie has!" he said cheerfully.

"You are so weird," she said fondly.

"Yet y'love me." Roy chuckled. "Okay, little Arrowette, this batch of slightly spicy minestrone-ish chili is done. Do you want cornbread to go with it, or are tortillas good?"

"I do," she admitted. "And oooo," she murmured--cornbread sounded good, but it was a lot more work and . "Tortillas are fine."

"Cornbread it is, then." Roy said firmly.

Cissie laughed. "Thanks, Roy," she said. "You don't have to, though."

"I wanna." Roy said, "And listen to me, Cissie. You want something, would like something, you ask. Got that? I'm not a mind reader, and you shouldn't have to settle if you don't have to."

Cissie blushed a little, rubbing her neck awkwardly. "I know. I'm sorry. I just--I guess I'm not used to that yet."

"Yeah, it does take getting used to, I'll admit." Roy said, "Okay. Dessert... hm. Any ideas?"

"Um." She thought about it for a minute, figuring that after what he'd just said, Roy would want an actual opinion. "Does chocolate pudding go with minestrone-chili?"

"Chocolate pudding goes with anything, and probably everything." Roy said, "'kay, I can make that." he smiled, "Lian likes it. Lots of stirring."

"Awesome," Cissie said with a grin. "Can there be Cool Whip with it?"

"...Cissie!" Roy rebuked, "IS there another way? IF there is, and that is a BIG IF, I do not want to know. And you're not to tell Lian such horrific things."
